Ross Wagner grew up here, in an East Hill bungalow up on brick piers that his grandparents bought when Ninth Avenue was still the edge of things, and went to work for a Pensacola remodeling crew out of high school. He spent most of his twenties pulling heart pine floors, gutting kitchens, tearing off storm-damaged roofs and hauling out garages and sheds from Gulf Breeze to Molino, watching the same problems repeat themselves. The container never came when it was supposed to. When it did, the invoice had grown. Nobody ever warned a homeowner that a 1910 heart-pine house on piers weighs far more, load for load, than a modern one, so the overage landed before the dust settled. And nobody told anyone that wet storm debris keeps taking on weight until a big box is too heavy to move and it sits stranded in the yard for a week.

In 2016 he bought a used roll-off truck and four cans, parked them on 333 N 14th Ave in East Hill just north of downtown, and started answering the phone himself. The first job was a tear-off off Creighton Road for a homeowner whose previous hauler had cancelled twice while the crew stood on the roof waiting. She still calls us, and she still tells the story.

Word moved the way it does here — through contractors, through neighbours, through the guy at the supply counter who mentions that the dumpster people actually showed up. Then two things settled it: storm seasons, when every roofer in town needs cans in the same fortnight, and the PCS wave, when a property manager turning thirty units between May and August remembers exactly who answered the phone. We added trucks as the calls came in rather than borrowing against volume we did not have yet. 10 years on we run a small fleet, we still dispatch out of Pensacola, and the phone still rings at a desk with somebody local behind it.

The dumpster industry has a reputation problem and it is largely self-inflicted. Low teaser rates, a tonnage allowance buried in the fine print, then a bill with an overage charge nobody explained. We priced against that from day one. When you call, we ask what you are throwing away, what it weighs, how long you need it and where it is going. Then we give you a number that includes delivery, pickup, the rental window and disposal. If we think you are about to order the wrong size, we say so — even when the wrong size is the more expensive one.

It is not a slogan. It means our dispatcher knows which older blocks off Palafox Street and around North Hill have drives too narrow to take a 30 and live oak limbs too low for the arm, which Milton and Ferry Pass lots are still served off the back alley, which dirt lanes out toward Molino and Century a loaded truck should not commit to for a couple of days after a hard rain, which beach-access turns on Perdido Key are too tight for the tandem, and roughly what a 1,900 square foot house produces when three layers of roof come off. It means that when a storm tracks across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties and half the region wants a container in the same week, our trucks are already here.

We have seen the mistakes so you do not have to

The four that cost people the most money, in order: ordering by volume when the debris is dense — heart pine, plaster and stacked flooring layers are the usual culprits — forgetting that a three-layer tear-off is three roofs and not one, setting a container on a dirt or sand lane two days after a hard rain when the ground was still soft, and heaping a load proud of the rails so it cannot be tarped before an afternoon downpour adds a ton of water weight to it. Every one of those is avoidable with one honest conversation before delivery.

We have cleared whole streets of storm-damaged roofs in a single week, three-layer tear-offs off the big houses in North Hill and the Seville district, full gut jobs in East Hill and downtown off Palafox Street, block after block of rentals flipped through the PCS wave between May and August, plaster and lath and heart pine stripped out of 1920s houses sitting on piers, new construction cans out west and north past Creighton Road and US-29, restaurant and retail fit-outs along Cervantes Street and Garden Street, shops, equipment sheds and outbuildings emptied out in the county between Pace, Ensley and Brent, concrete and old brick broken out of drives and aprons, whole pines and limb wood run as clean separate loads after Sally, water-damaged drywall, carpet and insulation pulled inside the 24 to 48 hour mould window, and garages, attics, crawlspaces and back-lot sheds packed with two decades of bikes, tools and holiday boxes. Every one of those loads behaves differently at the scale house, and knowing that in advance is most of the job.
