Perdido Key is the barrier island on the southwest corner of Escambia County, running out along SR-292 toward the Alabama line, and it is about forty minutes from the yard — out Barrancas or Navy Boulevard, along Gulf Beach Highway and Sorrento Road, then over the Theo Baars Bridge onto the key itself. It is a completely different job to anything on the mainland, and we treat it that way.

The building stock is condos, beach houses on pilings, and a good number of rental properties that turn over hard. Nothing here is slab-on-grade in the way a Pace subdivision is; the houses are lifted, the ground floor is often parking and storage, and the debris from a renovation has to come down stairs or over a rail before it ever reaches a container. That shapes the work: interior remodels and flooring replacements in condos, rental turnovers and furniture clear-outs, deck and stair rebuilds, and re-roofs where the wind-uplift rules on an exposed Gulf-front property are as strict as they get in Florida.

And then the storms. Perdido Key takes hurricanes with nothing in front of it. Ivan in 2004 devastated this island and Sally in 2020 hit close enough to do serious damage again, and the whole place has been rebuilt, raised and rebuilt around that reality. After a storm the work is roof, soffit, window and interior tear-out on lifted structures, plus sand and vegetation that has moved where it should not be. Season is June through November and everyone here knows it. Gulf Islands National Seashore takes up the west end of the key, which limits what is developed and where anything can be staged.

What we know about working in Perdido Key

Barrier island delivery has its own rules and they are not negotiable. Access is tight — short sandy or shell drives, condo lots laid out for cars rather than a truck with a hoist arm, and streets where a roll-off cannot simply be dropped wherever it is convenient. The dune system and the sea oats on it are protected, so nothing gets staged on a dune, over the dune line, or where wind and rain will carry material toward the Gulf or the sound. Sand is the surface everywhere, and it will not carry a loaded truck the way a concrete drive does, so we look at the approach before we commit and we set on the hardest ground available with protection boards down. In a condo you are also dealing with an association: get the placement approved by the HOA or property manager before delivery, because we have been turned around at the gate more than once by a rule the owner did not know about. Placement in the public right-of-way is an Escambia County question, and near the Gulf Islands National Seashore boundary there are federal rules on top. Escambia and Santa Rosa are separate jurisdictions, and nothing that applies on Pensacola Beach automatically applies here. Getting a truck to you

Out of the yard we run west and south — Barrancas or Navy Boulevard to Gulf Beach Highway, then Sorrento Road and SR-292 onto Perdido Key Drive. Around forty minutes on a normal morning, longer any warm weekend when beach traffic fills the key. There is one road on and off the island, so a wreck or a bridge backup puts everyone in the same queue and we schedule early to stay ahead of it. Permits, streets and placement in Perdido Key

On a private driveway in Perdido Key you generally do not need a municipal permit.
