It is a working community and it has been one for a long time. The International Paper mill sits at the heart of it and Ascend Performance Materials is the other major plant, and between them they set the tone of the place: shift work, practical houses, big yards and people who own their own tools.

The housing runs from mid-century brick ranch on generous lots through 1980s and 1990s subdivision to newer slab-on-grade construction off Kingsfield Road and around the Highway 297A corridor, and then out into genuinely rural acreage toward the Escambia River bottom. Almost none of it is small. That size is what drives the container work here — garages, workshops, pole barns, equipment sheds and thirty years of storage that finally has to come out when a property changes hands or a family finally gets to the job. Add re-roofs on the older ranch stock, fence and deck tear-outs, and steady contractor work around the plants, and Cantonment stays busy for us year-round.

North Escambia takes weather too. Cantonment is inland enough to escape storm surge but not the wind or the rain, and Ivan and Sally both put a lot of pine and live oak on the ground up here. Limb wood and whole pines are the debris, not palm, and Florida wants that vegetative material moved as a separate clean load to a yard-waste facility rather than mixed into a construction box. On a property with both a torn-up roof and a yard full of limbs, that means two loads or two boxes, and it is worth doing right.

The good news about Cantonment is space — most of these lots have room for a truck to back in and set a box without a conversation. The thing that actually catches people out is what is under the ground and what is over the drive. Plenty of properties out here are on septic and a private well rather than on utilities, and a loaded roll-off will not do a drain field any favours, so flag the tank, the field and the well head before delivery or walk the spot with the driver. Live oaks over a long drive are the other one; the hoist arm needs serious vertical clearance to raise and set, well above the height of the truck itself, and a limb that clears a pickup will not clear a roll-off. Getting a truck to you

Straight north on US-29 out of the yard through Brent, Ensley and Gonzalez, then off at Muscogee Road or Kingsfield depending on the address. Twenty-five minutes on a clear morning. What we plan around is the US-29 commercial strip at rush hour and the shift changes at the mill, both of which put real traffic on the same road we need. On the rural side we ask about the gate width, the turnaround and whether the drive is sand or clay, because a farm gate that looks wide from the house is often tighter than a roll-off needs.
