The heavy box

10 Yard Dumpster Rental in Pensacola, FL

The size nobody asks for until the scale settles the argument. Concrete, brick, block, tile, sand and fill all run roughly 2,400 to 2,800 pounds per cubic yard, and on the Gulf Coast you can add wet sand and old seawall concrete to that list. Dense material fills a 10 yard by weight long before it fills it by volume. That is the entire point of the box.

A 10 yard roll-off is 12 feet long, 8 feet wide and about three and a half feet tall, rated for roughly two to three tons — call it three pickup loads. On a lot of Pensacola jobs it is the only container that makes sense, and not because the pile is small. It is because the pile is dense. Weight stops a truck long before volume does, and in a town built on sand that catches people out constantly.

Why people choose the 10 yard

Start with the arithmetic, because it decides everything else. Concrete, brick, block, mortar, tile with its thinset bed, sand and clean fill all land somewhere around 2,400 to 2,800 pounds per cubic yard. Four cubic yards of broken slab — a piece of driveway barely bigger than a parking space — is already better than three tons and it is sitting in the bottom third of the container, nowhere near the rails. A driveway, patio, pool deck or front walkway tear-out is tons before it ever looks full. That is why our Pensacola dumpster sizing guide starts with weight instead of volume, and why concrete and heavy debris hauling gets its own container size. A full driveway replacement is a 10 hauled three times, not a 30 hauled once. A 30 loaded with concrete goes over legal axle weight while it still looks two-thirds empty, and the driver will not lift it. The 10 is built so a legal payload and a full box arrive at the same moment.

The other job this box does around here is waterfront demolition. Dock, pier, boat-lift and seawall tear-outs on Bayou Texar, Bayou Chico, Bayou Grande and the bay side of Gulf Breeze produce exactly the wrong kind of debris for a big container: broken seawall concrete and cap, treated pilings, marine hardware, cleats, bolts and bracket steel. It is heavy, it is awkward, and it soaks up water sitting in the yard, which only makes it heavier. We run those as staged heavy loads through demolition debris hauling and keep nothing stockpiled where runoff reaches the bayou. The same weight discipline applies inside an old house. Heart pine, old-growth framing, plaster and lath and stacked layers of flooring are far denser than modern debris, so on the historic stock covered in our guide to historic home renovation debris the honest answer is usually to size down and swap rather than order one big box.

Then there is the footprint. Twelve feet of steel tucks into a narrow original driveway in North Hill, Seville or East Hill where nothing longer will sit without hanging into the street or blocking the walk. Those drives were poured for one car and a lot of them have a live oak limbing low over the approach. Apron and sidewalk tear-outs, porch steps, an old brick planter, a storm-cracked walk, shell and paver removal, a grade correction that produced more sand than anyone expected — all of it is 10 yard work. See residential dumpster rental for the household side, and read how we protect a driveway on delivery before you pick the spot, because a loaded box on sandy ground behaves differently than it does on concrete.

Good fit for

  • Driveway, apron and sidewalk tear-out in stages
  • Patio slab, porch steps and pool deck concrete
  • Brick, block and mortar from a wall takedown
  • Seawall, dock and boat-lift demolition debris
  • Bathroom and entry tile with the thinset bed
  • Sand, fill and sod off a grade correction
  • Footing and shed slab rubble on a small demo
  • Shell, pavers and landscape stone removal

Not the right size for

  • Whole-house cleanouts full of bulky furniture
  • Garage, attic and carport clear-outs with light volume
  • Multi-room remodels making airy, bulky debris
  • Commercial and retail fit-out volume

Will it fit?

Give the truck about 60 feet of straight approach, roughly 10 and a half feet of width and 20 feet or more of overhead clearance for the hoist arm to swing. In this town the number-one overhead obstruction is a low live oak limb — ahead of service drops, carport roofs and porch overhangs — so walk the run and then look up. Twelve feet is the size that fits a narrow North Hill or East Hill drive when nothing longer will. Protection boards go down as standard, and they matter more on sandy, shell and paver drives, including Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key, where a loaded box works itself down into soft ground faster than people expect after rain. Out in rural north Escambia and Santa Rosa County, flag your septic field and well head before we arrive; nobody wants a loaded roll-off parked over a lateral line. We photograph the set on arrival either way.

Before delivery, move cars and bins, mark irrigation heads and septic lids, and tell us about new concrete, soft ground, a steep grade or low power lines. Our delivery and driveway protection guide covers all of it.

10 Yard Dumpster FAQs

Why would a whole driveway replacement only need a 10 yard dumpster?

Because concrete runs roughly 2,400 to 2,800 pounds per cubic yard. A two-car Pensacola driveway at four inches thick is close to ten tons of rubble once it is broken out, and no roll-off leaves your property over legal weight. The answer is never a bigger container — it is a small container hauled several times. We stage the swaps so your breaker crew keeps swinging, but call before demolition day so the rotation is already on the board.

Can I put sand, fill and sod in a 10 yard dumpster?

Yes, and the 10 is the only size we will put it in. Sand, spoil off a trench and sod from a grade correction weigh like rock, so a container that looks a third full is already at a legal payload. Keep it as a clean heavy load if you can, with no wood or trash mixed through, because clean fill and mixed debris go to different places. Tell us what you are digging and we will size it.

Is a 10 yard right for a dock or seawall tear-out?

It is the right box for the concrete side of that work. Broken seawall, cap and dock footings are dense, and treated pilings with marine hardware still in them are heavier than they look after sitting in the water. We usually stage a 10 for the heavy material and handle bulky decking separately. Nothing gets stockpiled where runoff reaches a bayou or the bay, and stormwater requirements do change — confirm current rules with the county or the city before you start.

How many pickup loads does a 10 yard dumpster hold?

About three full-size pickup beds loaded level. That comparison is honest on volume and badly misleading on weight, because three heaped truckloads of broken concrete is far more than a half-ton pickup should ever carry. Use the pickup number for bulky material and the tonnage allowance for anything dense. If your pile is mixed remodel debris with masonry running through it, describe what is actually in it and we will pick the container for you.

Will a 10 yard fit a narrow North Hill or Seville driveway?

This is the size that fits when nothing else does. Twelve feet of steel sits on the original single-width drives in North Hill, Seville and East Hill without blocking the sidewalk or hanging into the street. The usual obstacles are a live oak limbing low over the approach and the power drop at the corner of the house. If the drive is genuinely too tight, street placement is sometimes workable but can need approval — start with our guide to dumpster permits in Pensacola and confirm current requirements with the city.
