Roll-off containers for Century homes and jobsites

Century is the far north end of Escambia County, right on the Alabama line, and it is the longest run we make — the better part of an hour straight up US-29 from the yard. It is a small town with a real history: the Alger-Sullivan Lumber Company built it, the mill defined it for generations, and the mill village blocks and the old company housing are still standing and still lived in.

That history is what makes the work here what it is. A lot of the housing is older frame stock, much of it on piers with a crawlspace rather than slab, with heart pine framing and flooring, tongue-and-groove decking and beadboard inside. When one of those houses gets renovated or cleared out it produces dense, heavy, salvageable material, and the old lumber genuinely has buyers on the Gulf Coast — it is worth pulling the flooring, doors, mantels and hardware before the container goes in. Alongside that we do estate cleanouts, roof tear-offs, mobile home removals, outbuilding demolition and the acreage work that comes with rural north Escambia.

Because it is so far out, we route Century deliberately. Same-day happens when a truck is already headed north to Molino or Cantonment; otherwise we ask for a day of notice and we will usually try to pair the delivery with another north-end job. It is also worth planning the size right the first time, because a swap-out on a 38 mile run is not something anyone wants to do twice in a week. When in doubt we will size up rather than down. Storm cleanup after Ivan and Sally reached this far inland too — wind and rain rather than surge, and pine and live oak limb wood rather than anything coastal.

What we know about working in Century

Century runs on the same rural rules as Molino and the north end generally. Properties are commonly on septic and a well, so mark the tank, the drain field and the well head before the truck arrives. Drives are sand, clay or dirt and they need dry weather to carry a loaded roll-off, and we would rather move a delivery a day than rut your access. Low limbs are a constant — the hoist arm needs real height above the truck to raise and set a box, and live oak and pine hang low over a lot of these approaches. In the old mill village blocks the lots are tight and the streets are narrow, so placement gets planned on the phone rather than worked out in the moment; if a container has to sit in the street that is a Town of Century right-of-way question, and on US-29 it can be an FDOT one. On the older houses expect the pre-1980 material questions — asbestos in floor tile and mastic, pipe and duct wrap, textured ceilings and cement-asbestos siding, and lead paint on anything pre-1978. We cannot take asbestos-containing material in any container, so if it is suspected it gets tested and handled by a licensed abatement contractor first. Century is Escambia County, a separate jurisdiction from Santa Rosa, and being on the state line does not make Alabama rules apply.

Getting a truck to you

Straight up US-29 from the yard, past Cantonment and Molino, all the way to the north county line. Close to an hour on a clear run and there is nothing to slow a truck down once we are past Gonzalez. Because it is the longest leg we make, we ask for a day of notice where we can get it and we will often pair a Century delivery with another job on the north end. Tell us up front about drive surface, low limbs, gate width and where the septic and well sit, so the truck arrives ready rather than working it out in your yard.

Routes we run: US-29, Pensacola Boulevard, SR-4 through town, Highway 4 toward Flomaton and the Alabama line, Highway 95A.

Permits, streets and placement in Century

On a private driveway in Century you generally do not need a municipal permit. Placement in the public street or right-of-way is a different matter and normally requires approval — from the borough or township where the road is locally maintained, or from FDOT where it is a state route. Every municipality in Escambia County runs its own form and its own lead time, and older streets here often have no off-street parking at all, so plan the permit before you plan the delivery. It is a ten-minute call that saves a week.

Our permit and placement guide walks through the whole process, and Florida DEP publishes the Covered Device Recycling Act rules and the other statewide disposal restrictions that apply to every load we haul out of Century. County recycling and household hazardous waste dates are published by Escambia County.

Dumpster Rental in Century — FAQs

Do you actually deliver as far north as Century?

Yes. It is the longest run on our board, close to an hour each way up US-29, so we plan it rather than improvise it. Same-day is possible when a truck is already working the north end at Molino or Cantonment; otherwise a day of notice makes it far easier. Because a swap-out on that distance costs everyone time, we will talk through sizing carefully and generally size up rather than risk running short.

What should I know before renovating an old mill village house?

Two things. Pull the salvage first — heart pine flooring, beadboard, doors, mantels, hardware and old brick all have buyers here. Then treat pre-1980 material with respect: asbestos turns up in floor tile and mastic, pipe wrap, textured ceilings and cement-asbestos siding, and pre-1978 paint carries lead under the EPA RRP rule. We cannot accept asbestos-containing material in a container at all. Have it tested and abated by a licensed contractor first.

Century is on the Alabama line. Whose rules apply?

Florida’s, and specifically Escambia County’s, along with Town of Century rules inside the town limits. Being close to the state line does not change the jurisdiction. Escambia County is also separate from Santa Rosa County, so nothing filed over there applies here. For a street or right-of-way placement, ask the town, and ask FDOT if it touches the US-29 right-of-way. Requirements change, so confirm before delivery day.

How quickly can you deliver a dumpster to Century?

Century is about 38 miles north of our North 14th Avenue yard, so it is a routine run for us. Same-day delivery is usually possible if you call before about 11am, and next morning otherwise. Storm weeks and the spring remodeling peak can stretch that, and we will tell you honestly when you call.

Do you charge extra to deliver to Century?

No. Century sits inside our standard service area and the flat rate is the same as it is in Pensacola. Delivery, pickup, your rental window and disposal up to the agreed tonnage are all included in the number we quote you.

What size dumpster do most Century customers take?

A 20 yard is the most common by a wide margin — it suits kitchen guts, multi-room renovations and three-bedroom house cleanouts. But if you are stripping plaster and lath out of a pre-war house, or moving brick, block, concrete or a chimney, size DOWN to a 10 yard heavy container and take two hauls — that material hits the weight limit long before it fills the box.
