Century is the far north end of Escambia County, right on the Alabama line, and it is the longest run we make — the better part of an hour straight up US-29 from the yard. It is a small town with a real history: the Alger-Sullivan Lumber Company built it, the mill defined it for generations, and the mill village blocks and the old company housing are still standing and still lived in.

That history is what makes the work here what it is. A lot of the housing is older frame stock, much of it on piers with a crawlspace rather than slab, with heart pine framing and flooring, tongue-and-groove decking and beadboard inside. When one of those houses gets renovated or cleared out it produces dense, heavy, salvageable material, and the old lumber genuinely has buyers on the Gulf Coast — it is worth pulling the flooring, doors, mantels and hardware before the container goes in. Because it is so far out, we route Century deliberately. Same-day happens when a truck is already headed north to Molino or Cantonment; otherwise we ask for a day of notice and we will usually try to pair the delivery with another north-end job. It is also worth planning the size right the first time, because a swap-out on a 38 mile run is not something anyone wants to do twice in a week. When in doubt we will size up rather than down. Century runs on the same rural rules as Molino and the north end generally. Properties are commonly on septic and a well, so mark the tank, the drain field and the well head before the truck arrives. Drives are sand, clay or dirt and they need dry weather to carry a loaded roll-off, and we would rather move a delivery a day than rut your access. Low limbs are a constant — the hoist arm needs real height above the truck to raise and set a box, and live oak and pine hang low over a lot of these approaches. In the old mill village blocks the lots are tight and the streets are narrow, so placement gets planned on the phone rather than worked out in the moment; if a container has to sit in the street that is a Town of Century right-of-way question, and on US-29 it can be an FDOT one. On the older houses expect the pre-1980 material questions — asbestos in floor tile and mastic, pipe and duct wrap, textured ceilings and cement-asbestos siding, and lead paint on anything pre-1978. We cannot take asbestos-containing material in any container, so if it is suspected it gets tested and handled by a licensed abatement contractor first. Century is Escambia County, a separate jurisdiction from Santa Rosa, and being on the state line does not make Alabama rules apply.

Getting a truck to you

Straight up US-29 from the yard, past Cantonment and Molino, all the way to the north county line. Close to an hour on a clear run and there is nothing to slow a truck down once we are past Gonzalez. Because it is the longest leg we make, we ask for a day of notice where we can get it and we will often pair a Century delivery with another job on the north end. Permits, streets and placement in Century

On a private driveway in Century you generally do not need a municipal permit. Placement in the public street or right-of-way is a different matter and normally requires approval — from the borough or township where the road is locally maintained, or from FDOT where it is a state route. Every municipality in Escambia County runs its own form and its own lead time, and older streets here often have no off-street parking at all, so plan the permit before you plan the delivery.
